Took me long enough

I've been working on my entry for J. Scott Campbell's interview and contest over at sketchoholic.com, ever since my holiday started this friday, and now it's done. At first I couldn't really decide whether or not to even enter, because the theme was a tricky one: "sexy fairy tale character". The challenge would do me good, I thought, as it is miles away from what I usually do. I would have to really study anatomy to make it work and also read up on a few fairytales. I chose to do a fairy godmother because you don't see too many of those around.

Having settled on an idea, I ran into the next obstacle: should I paint or draw or both? I knew I needed to practice linework so drawing it would be ideal and the other day I figured out how to do line separation in Painter, so lines it was. I think I drew it three times before it came out right.

Tried something new for coloring, especially where the shadows are concerned. Hope you like it :D

Midnight Marsupials

For Charles Santoso's contest and interview over at sketchoholic. Theme was 'Nocturnal' and it was a lot of fun to do. It's been a busy week, with school assignments and all - animated flour sacks this week - but I really had to make this painting. Actually finished an hour or so before the deadline. Again, fun fun fun :D

They come at Night

This was a big one. Took me like forever. I tried out several possible mediums before settling on 'tried and true' digital painting. Although I really wanted to do something special and traditonal this time 'round, I couldn't be happier with the result. Plus, was great fun :D

The most fun was coming up with the idea. Think of these semi-magical and dragon-like creatures as the bringers of nightmares or the nightmares themselves. They are curious by nature, but do their job well. Can you spot the youngest member of the group? (Hint: he's called 'Buttons')

This is of course my entry for the Chris Sanders contest over at sketchoholic.com - I'm a huge fan of Sanders, especially his comic, Kiskaloo, which you should definitely check out, and I am really looking forward to the interview.

I Wanna Be The Very Best!

Finally got the piece to work for me and finished it today. Really happy with the result, especially because it caused me so much trouble. The epiphany that saved it all, was making the pokémon look like plush toys. Totally did it for me.

WIP Pokémon Piece

I've mentioned Dice Tsutsumi's contest on Sketchoholic before, topic is 'your favourite childhood anime in your own style'. Still haven't decided whether to enter or not. The only anime from my childhood that I remember in any kind of detail would be Pokémon. I remember bits and pieces of other shows, but Pokémon was the big hit when I was growing up.

Anyway, here's a sketch to get things going.

Wall Street Cyclops

Nate Wragg will be interviewed on sketchoholic.com in about 7 hours. The contest theme this time is 'wall street cyclops', which I think is a funny idea. Really had fun with my entry. Went the traditional route this time with some newly bought gouache. Again, a lot of fun :D

Oh, and I joined Intensity Club this morning. Topic was 'carny gone wild'. Got a few votes and had fun getting intense.

Last week I entered the contest that accompanied Bobby Chiu's interview of Everett Downing. The theme here was 'Street Magic'. I felt like doing a superhero type character, so I did.

My submission for Aaron Hartline's contest and interview over at sketchoholic. Topic: design a new something-head, like mr. potato-head. Was fun.

Godzilla for sketchoholic contest

Bobby chiu will be interviewing Derek Thompson later today, and as always there's a contest to go with the interview. Topic is 'Godzilla', and, being a huge fan of giant monsters, I just had to enter.

I was planning to go the tradtional route this time, but I quickly messed up the watercoloring. Luckily, I had scanned the pencils and so colored the piece digitally. I think it worked out great in the end.
