Konnichiwa!
Another taw monkey painting, this time the theme was 'face in the crowd'. I like to think he's trying to blend into an old monster movie. Or maybe he's there for the sights.
Anyway, great fun :D

Red Poala
'The Red Poala is roughly the size of a grown man's head and is known to be completely still when being watched. This is the female of the species and is decidedly brown in color. The males, however, sport a vibrant red fur, explaining the name. Males are hard to find, though, as they only move about during mating season and hide for the rest of the year to protect their fur from sunlight.'
This was fun :D

Curiosity Takes Flight
For the James Robertson contest and interview over at sketchoholic.com
Topic was 'flight' and was great fun. Spent a long time thinking about how to go about it, but ended on just painitng it, digitally of course. Again, had fun :D
Also, did another sketch-o-daily during the week. Topic here was 'buddies'.

Fall is Here
It is, you know. This is for a Sketch-o-Daily over at sketchoholic.com. Topic is 'spiky', so naturally I thought 'hedgehog' or something like that. More like spiky rodent, really. The autumn-thing just kinda happened. I like it :D
Done in Photoshop, by the way.

Check out my new hat - Durr...
For tonight's CHIUstream. Topic was 'fluffy animal mind control'. Great topic, had a lot of fun.
Could probably have gone fluffier.

what a hurdle
So I just finished an application test for a Danish design school. It's been a two-week long creative rollercoaster ride, with plenty of ups and one big down last week when I had to change direction well over a week into it. It was tough. I've ended way up, though. Really happy with the end result. What I handed in, was a portion of my process, brainstorms, experiments, etc. and a finished 'product' to solve or comment on the 'problem' or issue I worked with. I ended up making illustrations for a book.
I'd love to show you, but I didn't have time to scan it and all I did manage to do was take some pretty awful pictures. I'll see if I can fix them up on the computer, but if not, I'm going to the school to get the thing back some time in August.
It was really hard to let it go.
Anyway, after this I finally had some time to just sketch and paint for myself, so yesterday, while watching an episode of Hercule Poirot (gotta love that Belgian!), I sketched some creatures.
First one, just pen on sketchbook paper. The others, pencil on cardboard with some watersolluble colored pencils for shading and white details. Fishels, I call them :D
Tomorrow, I have an application test at a school of animation, The Animation Workshop. Hoping it'll go well.
On Friday I'm going to Berlin for a week. Hoping to get time to sketch while down there. Leaving the laptop at home. Should be fun. We'll be visiting some designers and see the art community there up close.
See y'all in a week or so.

Was able to enter a CHIUstream challenge last night, though I'm as busy as ever at the moment. I'm just happy I did it :D

i like potatoes - the first book
So this past week I've been making books. Like with the painting we did some time ago, this was a special offer, a class we don't usually have. I was planning to take it easy, relax with the books and get around to just having some fun, playing games, watching movies and reading books. Making books is, however, a lot of fun so I actually ended up spending both day and night making them.
Our first assignment was to make two books using some really thick cardboard. one accordion and one codex.
We'll start off with the accordion.
I basically just started drawing these creatures on the cardboard pages, figuring I'd find out what to make of the book later. Various details painted in with white gouache.
Then came the task of adding content, and I landed on writing small texts that could be the creatures' thoughts. The rhino-looking fellow thinks 'I like potatoes', for instance. It was a fun sollution, I thought.
See you later for book two.

Hellboy-ish
Did this way back on Monday, and it didn't come out the way I had planned - I messed up the red color pretty good and the underpants just didn't work in the end. I still like the design, though, especially the left hand, and I might redo it some day.

Tribal Creature
Continuing on with the watercolors. Think I should have stopped before the blue background. I only had a small brush, so covering the background evenly wasn't possible. Quite happy with the 'fro, though :D
Gonna keep going.

First CHIUstream in a While
Finally had the time to join another live CHIUstream. Been far too long in my opinion. Months no doubt.
Anyway, theme was creepy/cute, and here's what I did. Not the best execution, but I like the idea.
I feel good :D

Painting Update
A couple more pictures.
I really think the background color compliments the picture quite well. This isn't actually the finished version, though - I added some stone pillars in the distance.
The second picture is of my second painting - started today. Needs a little somethin' somethin', I think. Might work on it a bit tonight actually.
In other news: I ate broccoli for the first time today. Yay me!!

More Painting
I would call this done, but the white background is bothering me - gotta sleep on it.
I'm calling it: "Boris on the cliff, yearning for apples"

Painting Class Pictures
Special classes this week - I chose painting. We started out with some exercises yesterday, practicing color mixing and such.
The rest of the week, we'll be working on our own paintings, subject and method completely open. I went and did this little demon critter and an apple. Not quite done yet, but I'm liking it so far.
It's being done in acrylics on cotton canvas, which I've never tried before. Loving it so far :D

Latest Stuff
Had a really good weekend, productivity-wise. Thought I'd post my most recent works, as I've kinda been neglecting my blog.
So I've been listening to Bobby Chiu's Chuistream lately, the recorded ones that is, and I decided to try and do on of the challenges from the recording, so here's a 45 min. ghost:
Of course I don't finish every piece right away, though I really want to, so here are a few WIP's:

After that I thought I'd do a few creature concepts, just to get a break from anatomy, but still make some progress. Here are three sea creatures:
The darkbellied Sea Rhino:
The Orange Half-turtle:
The White-bibbed Crocfish:
